People are being robbed by telephone scammers falsely claiming to be from Wal-Mart:
Local consumers are getting phone calls from telemarketers who claim to be from Wal-Mart. The telemarketers offer $500 in shopping vouchers. Consumers are told in order to receive the gift cards they must pay $4.99 for shipping and handling. The caller then asks for the consumer's personal checking accounty number and more than $4.99 is taken out of the consumer's account. Here's one woman's story; state governments are aware of the scam...Wal-Mart has received thousands of calls from all over the U. S. about this telemarketing scam. There is a similar scam going around using the Home Depot name. The telemarketing calls are reportedly coming from the Consumer Rewards Network, a company that has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau in California.
